Spokane, Wash. – Despite shutting out the top team in the USL Super League, Spokane Zephyr FC couldn’t capitalize on their limited offensive opportunities, playing to a 0-0 draw against Fort Lauderdale United FC on Saturday.
Zephyr FC (5-7-7) extended their unbeaten streak to three matches as they continue their fight for a playoff spot. Meanwhile, Fort Lauderdale United FC (9-5-5) recorded their ninth consecutive match without a loss. The result also marked the first scoreless match of the season for Fort Lauderdale.
Zephyr FC head coach Jo Johnson praised the team’s determination after a demanding stretch of matches, saying:
“I’m proud of the team for earning 7 out of 9 points in a week. It’s a testament to the players’ resilience, focus, and commitment to each other.”
Goalkeeper Hope Hisey anchored a disciplined defensive effort, notching three saves on her way to a clean sheet in her 12th appearance of the season. Hissey and the backline stayed organized under pressure, particularly in the 65th minute when Fort Lauderdale forward Shina Gordon narrowly missed a chance to put her side ahead, sending a shot just wide of the post.
Hissey reflected on her performance, adding:
“It was great to end the road trip with a clean sheet. We’ll take this momentum into our next homestand.”
Aside from that opportunity, both sides struggled to convert chances into shots on target. Spokane managed 11 shots but only tested the goalkeeper once, while Fort Lauderdale tallied 13 shots with four on frame.
After the match, Coach Johnson spoke further about the team’s growth and resolve:
“These are the kinds of games where you see what we’re made of. We stayed compact, we stayed disciplined, and we showed we can go toe-to-toe with anyone. We know we have to be sharper in the final third, but this was a big step for us.”
Spokane Zephyr FC’s best opportunities came early in the match as they advanced the ball upfield with purpose, but clear looks at goal were few and far between against a disciplined Fort Lauderdale defense.
With the draw, both teams earned a point. Spokane Zephyr FC remains in sixth place, six points back from a playoff position, while Fort Lauderdale United FC holds steady at the top of the league table.
Defender Alyssa Bourgeois spoke about the team’s overall performance and the focus moving forward:
“Unbelievably proud of the team’s performance today. This was our third game in a week and second one on the road. Despite all the obstacles, we didn’t complain—we embraced the challenges and put up a great performance against a talented team. Disappointed we didn’t walk away with all three points, but we’re focused on recovering and getting ready for the next game.”
Zephyr FC now return home after wrapping up their Florida road trip and will host Brooklyn FC on April 3rd at 6 PM at ONE Spokane Stadium. For tickets and more information about Spokane Zephyr FC, visit Zephyr FC Tickets
